DPAC is an independent organization made up of representatives from each of the school-based PACs. Only elected PAC representatives can vote at DPAC meetings but all parents are welcome and encouraged to attend its monthly meetings.

DPAC's role is to advise the Board of Education on any matter relating to education in the school district. DPAC supports PACs and parents and provides a voice for parent concerns and a parent perspective on Board decisions. Through its monthly meetings, DPAC provides a regular forum for the exchange of ideas and information between parents, trustees and school district staff. DPAC representatives attend Board meetings and report back to parents. They provide a parent perspective on proposed policies and appoint parents to district committees when invited. DPAC has input into provincial education matters through its active involvement with the British Columbia Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils (BCCPAC).

DPAC meetings are usually, but not always, held on the first Monday of each month. Schools volunteer to host each meeting and information about upcoming DPAC meetings, including the topic and location, is always sent to the schools and advertised in the "community events" section of local newspapers, as well as on the District website.
